Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) – Queen of Herbs

Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) is an erect multi-branched shrub that grows up to 30-60cms in height which in Kerala is commonly known as Tulsi. The holy basil is highly valued for Hindu religious traditions and also for its medicinal properties in Ayurveda.

The presence of the Tulsi plant symbolizes the religious bent of a Hindu family. A Hindu household is considered incomplete if it doesn’t have a Tulsi plant in the courtyard. Many families grow it in a specially built structure in front of the houses.

The holy basil is also an herbal remedy for a lot of common ailments so it is considered the “Queen of Herbs”.  Juiced tulsi leaf is used in ayurvedic remedies for common colds, respiratory disorders, mouth infections, insect bites, headaches, stomach disorders and even is said to reduce blood cholesterol levels.
