This post about the tendency of Indian elites to self-identify as middle class has been ringing in our ears, echoing earlier posts on topics that seem related in some manner, even if from different cultures. Why does it seem surprising that people who have had opportunity, and capitalize on it with great success, should want to associate with those who may not yet have made it quite as far? Why reach down the ladder to give a hand up?
For that matter, why bother cleaning up a mess others have made?
There do not have to be answers to these questions, but we will not stop looking for them.
